Greater
Brooklyn Health Coalition (GBHC) was formed
in 1997 as a project of the Jewish Community Relations
Council (JCRC) with the purpose of identifying the organizations that best represent
the major ethnic and religious groups in southern Brooklyn,
as well as the major health care organizations serving
these populations. Together, we create an agenda for
action and cooperation to address the healthcare concerns
of Brooklyn. Today, 100 agencies are members of GBHC, including community-based organizations, hospitals, health insurance companies, home care agencies, nursing facilities, mental health agencies, and educational institutions. Including the communities of Bay Ridge, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bensonhurst, Boro Park, Brighton Beach, Brownsville, Bushwick, Canarsie, Coney Island, Crown Heights, East New York, Flatbush (East and Central), Homecrest, Sheepshead Bay, and Sunset Park, GBHC represents the ethnic, religious, and geographic diversity of Brooklyn. GBHC addresses the health care concerns of its members by:
- Making local health care services better fit the
health care needs of the community in the most culturally
competent manner.
- Providing technical assistance to member organizations
for the issues and problems identified by providers
and consumers within the public health arena.
- Working to improve communication between the community,
local public and not-for-profit health providers, and local, state and
federal government.
- Utilizing educational and training forums to improve
quality, delivery and access to public health services.
- Serving as a linkage for strengthening relations
between all communities, ethnic, religious, socioeconomic,
and racial, with Brooklyn.
By building alliances within the faith- and community-based arenas, and across the public and private sectors, GBHC facilitates better communication. GBHC thereby enables the entire community to work together towards improving the quality of and access to healthcare in Brooklyn.
