Brooklyn Commemorates National Black AIDS Awareness Day 2010-02-00
Brooklyn
February 7, 2010 marks the tenth annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). This is a national community mobilization, HIV testing, and treatment initiative, which promotes awareness of, and access to, services for African Americans. The theme for NBHAAD 2010 is "A Choice & A Lifestyle."
Blacks are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. While making up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, they account for more than 49 percent of AIDS cases. AIDS is now the leading cause of death for Black women ages 25 to 34, and the second leading cause of death for Black men ages 35 to 44.
Of all racial and ethnic groups in the United States, HIV and AIDS have hit African Americans the hardest. The reasons are not directly related to race or ethnicity, but rather some of the barriers faced by many African Americans. These barriers can include poverty (being poor), sexually transmitted diseases, and stigma (negative attitudes, beliefs, and actions directed at people living with HIV/AIDS or directed at people who do things that might put them at risk for HIV). HIV remains a persistent threat to the health, well-being, and human potential of many African American communities. As the impact of the epidemic among African Americans has grown, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local public health agencies, and African American communities have stepped up efforts to address the crisis.
NBHAAD is planned, organized and coordinated by the Strategic Leadership Council*, a working group of national organizations in partnership with CDC. NBHAAD activities focus on motivating individuals to get tested and know their HIV status, and educating community members about the importance of HIV prevention, early detection, and treatment.
CDC is highly committed to reducing the impact of HIV on African American communities. CDC believes that a collaborative response by many is necessary to decrease the burden of HIV/AIDS among African Americans. Therefore, CDC and African American leaders from business, civil rights, entertainment, government, and the media are speaking out and taking action. With these partners, CDC is intensifying HIV prevention efforts in four areas: expanding the reach of comprehensive prevention programs; increasing opportunities for HIV testing and treatment; developing new, effective prevention strategies; and mobilizing broader community action.
It is necessary for African Americans to receive the information they need to protect their health and the health of their loved ones, and to get involved in their communities. When people affected and infected by HIV take collective action against the spread of this disease, we form a very powerful weapon. Together we can prevent HIV/AIDS, one voice, one experience, one community at a time!
What Can You Do?
* Learn About HIV/AIDS. Educate yourself, friends, and family about HIV/AIDS and what you can do to protect yourself.
* Get tested for HIV. To find a testing site near you, call 1-800-CDC-INFO, visit hivtest.org, or, on your cell phone, text your zip code to Know IT (566948).
* Speak Out against stigma, homophobia, racism, and other forms of discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS.
* Donate time and money to HIV/AIDS organizations that work within African American communities.

It's a Health Affair!!
You and Your Aging Parent
The first three of 10 sessions are outlined below. This series will provide
the family caregiver a map to navigate through the years of caring for an
elderly parent. Industry experts will provide information and tips on
resources available to ensure quality of life for the entire family.
1) When You Can’t Be There:
Selecting the Right Home Care & Adult Day Center (Feb 3)
Kathy Livingston, Senior Vice President of Senior Helpers, will discuss home care as an
option to keep loved ones safe while family members tend to the demands of life. Kathy will
review the types of agencies and questions to ask to ensure the best selection for your family,
as well as how to approach the topic with your elderly family member. Guest speaker,
Josephine Brown from Park Slope Geriatric Day Center, will discuss adult day facilities as an
additional option for safety and mental stimulation.
Senior Helpers is a companion care agency that opened in 2001 and expanded into the New
York City area, in 2008. Senior Helpers provides in-home care to individuals to keep them
enjoying the independence of living at home.
2) Understanding & Managing Balance Disorders (Feb 17)
Robert Coursen, PTA at METRO SPORTSMED® Physical and Occupational Therapy will
discuss the causes and treatments of Balance Disorders. This lecture will include
understanding the possible underlying diagnosis and management of orthopedic, neurologic,
and arthritic conditions. Most therapy services are covered by insurance plans.
3) New Developments & Achieving Organization (March 3)
Susan Matlow, founder of The Matlow Group, will speak about recent developments in
personal finance issues, including changes in federal and New York estate tax and income tax
rules, new Power of Attorney requirements, and the impact of health care legislation. Susan
also will discuss how to get organized and have peace of mind that your financial affairs are
in order.
The Matlow Group is a personal finance resource for senior citizens and their families. We
create individualized plans to alleviate worries about daily financial and administrative
matters. We help you sort out complex issues, make appropriate decisions, and avoid

*Scholarships are available for FAMILY WORKERS CURRENTLY EMPLOYED by community-based and non-profit organizations located within the Neighborhood Development Areas (NDAs).
• Do you want the families you work with to succeed?
• Do you want to rekindle family workers’ passion for their work?
If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” the Family Development Training and Credentialing (FDC) Program for frontline and family workers is for you. This program is a major New York State initiative to change the way health, education, and human services are delivered to families. FDC-trained workers help families capitalize on their strengths to set and achieve healthy family goals.
Developed by Cornell University, FDC training is attended by employees of organizations that want to invest in their workers and help them grow professionally, have a greater impact in their work, and experience greater job satisfaction. FDC training will help workers understand and reconnect with the mission of their organization. The training has an impact on all levels of an organization; it empowers and strengthens staff, gives staff new skills with which to better serve their constituents, excites and encourages supervisors and increases managers’ confidence and pride in their family workers.
The 90-hour training includes interactive classes, the development of a portfolio and skills application assignments, and a New York State FDC credential examination. Participants who successfully complete the program can earn a Family Development Credential, PONSI college credits, and Continuing Education Units.
Classes will be held on Fridays, beginning March 5 through June 18 from 10am-5pm
