Healthy Homes, Healthy Families Expo on Thursday, October 15, 2009 from 9am-8pm.
The last Healthy Homes Expo was in 2006 in Queens and was a huge success with over 1,000 people attending various seminars and many more people interacting with the various agencies and community organizations that exhibited that day. The event was cited as one of the best Healthy Homes, Healthy Families events in the country! Our planning committee intends to make this year's Expo bigger and better than ever.
Over 50 city, state, federal, CBO and private organizations are expected to participate. You don't want to miss this - for yourself as a resident, and your organization as a healthy homes education and/or care provider!
EXPO OVERVIEW
The one-day 2009 Healthy Homes, Healthy Families Expo will take place at Kingsborough Community College, located in the Manhattan Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn. Throughout the day, NYC Healthy Homes Grantees will supply 30-minute training classes on adverse health issues in the home. For the Expo, there will be Home Health & Safety demonstrations conducted throughout the day by trained community peer-educators. The public will be taught the critical relationship between indoor environment and health, and ways to avoid and effectively abate home health hazards, and minimize negative health outcomes. We expect to have dozens of information tables, as well as a children’s educational area where children will participate in learning about home health safety. In addition, there will be numerouse brochures, tchotchkes and Home Health & Safety Kits distributed.
NEW FEATURES
This year, a couple of new seminars will be held concurrently on the day of the Expo. New topics will include greening for NYC housing residents, and bed bug awareness. NYC Department of Mental Health and Hygiene will conduct several home health seminars in which their instructors will discuss smoking cessation, asthma triggers, and integrated pest management. Standard seminars - Lead Safe Work Practice, Visual Assessment, Lead Paint Awareness and Local Law 1 of 2004 Owner’s and Contractor’s Compliance - will also be available.
An assortment of vendors, guest speakers and politicians will participate in the 2009 Healthy Homes, Healthy Families Expo. Informational vendors and booths will offer resources and educational pamphlets on green building, home-improvement, contractor training and licensing, environmental home health hazards, and HPD home loans.

Central Brooklyn Influenza Awareness Week
November 8th – 15th 2009 2009-11-00
Central Brooklyn Influenza Awareness Week
November 8th – 15th 2009
Ideas for Activities
The goals of the Central Brooklyn Influenza Awareness Week are to:
- Raise awareness about the severity of influenza (the flu) and the importance of getting protection from the flu.
- Raise awareness about who needs to get vaccinated each year and where to get vaccinated.
- Increase influenza vaccination rates.
We need your help in getting the word out about the importance of getting vaccinated for influenza. Here is a list of ideas for activities to do during Central Brooklyn Influenza Awareness Week:
* Appeals about the flu from the pulpit or during meetings and community events.
*Organize “I took the shot because…” testimonials from people in your congregation or organization.
*Organize outreach to discuss the flu at locations where people congregate (barbershops, beauty salons, waiting rooms, subway stations, etc.)
* Hand out flyers with a listing of flu clinic locations.
* Organize a group walk or transportation to a flu clinic
* Organize Health Ministry workshops to address the toll the impact influenza has on the community.
* Create an educational workshop to address and overcome myths about the flu shot.
* Organizing youth ministries and community groups to talk about the flu shot in schools.
If you are interested in participating please contact Moses Mansu (faith based organizations) [646-253-5703 mmansu@health.nyc.gov] or Evelyn Ortiz (community based organizations) [718-573-4843 eortiz@health.nyc.gov]. Please share with us your plans to raise influenza awareness during the week of November 8-15th. After the week is over we will ask you about the success of your activities.
Talking Points for You to Share about Influenza
Getting seasonal influenza or H1N1 (swine flu) can be dangerous.
Influenza (the flu) is a serious disease of the nose, throat, and lungs. The flu is worse than a “cold”. It can make you sick for a week or longer with coughing, fever, aching and it can lead to pneumonia or other life threatening sicknesses.
Each year the flu causes an estimated 36,000 deaths and more than 200,000 hospitalizations nationally.
Seasonal influenza and pneumonia is the third leading cause of death in New York City.
Every year more than 2,000 New Yorkers die from influenza and pneumonia.
Compared to other neighborhoods, more Central Brooklyn residents die from flu related causes.
Too few Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Brownsville and East New York residents are getting the protection they need against influenza and pneumonia.
Getting vaccinated is the best protection against influenza.
The flu shot is safe.
A flu vaccination is just as important as any other life-saving medication. While it is impossible to prevent flu completely, getting the flu shot is the safest and most effective way to prevent the flu.
You need this year’s flu vaccine for this year’s flu.
Who should get the seasonal flu vaccine?
- Everyone who wants to avoid seasonal flu or passing it on to others
- Children aged 6 months to 18 years
- Pregnant women
- Health care workers
- Everyone 50 years and older
- People with a long term health problem
- People living in long-term-care facilities
- Household members and caregivers of children and the elderly
Who should get the H1N1 influenza vaccine?
- Pregnant women
- People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months
-Health care and emergency medical services workers
- Children and young adults aged 6 months to 24 years
- People aged 25-64 years with certain long-term health conditions

Make an appointment for yourself and the females in your life to get a mammogram if you (are over 40 and/or an at risk female) have not had one in the past year. Don’t let another year go by and not make an appointment to get your mammogram done. Awareness is the key to prevention and cure. Early detection saves lives.
Ask one of our Brooklyn Plaza providers to tell you more about the Mammogram and when it should be done.
MEN – ask your BPMC provider for information on Breast Cancer in men and make sure you get proper exams, too.
