PRESS CONFERENCE ON CITY HALL STEPS IS CULMINATION OF IDLE-FREE NYC CAMPAIGN 2009-05-05 10:00 AM
CITY HALL STEPS
260 Broadway New York
May 5, 2009 is World Asthma Day and the centerpiece of the Idle-Free NYC campaign. New Yorkers will converge on the steps of City Hall in recognition of their efforts to reduce vehicle idling and improve air quality. Schoolchildren, community organizers, elected officials, business representatives, and concerned citizens will be in attendance to make their voices heard and support better health for New York City. The press conference is also an opportunity to celebrate the passage of the nation’s first one-minute idling law.
Idle-Free NYC is a month-long campaign aiming to spread awareness among New Yorkers about city idling laws and to encourage behavioral change. All over New York City, schools, local businesses, large companies, and individuals are taking action to spread the message that idling vehicles are a threat to health, a waste of fuel, and against the law. Signs on bus tails and information on cup sleeves are furthering informing the general public.
The Idle-Free NYC campaign is a project of the Asthma Free School Zone. The Asthma Free School Zone (AFSZ) was founded in 2001 as a voluntary, neighborhood-based and school-centered program that strives to reduce asthma-related absenteeism through improved air quality in and around urban schools. The program has been implemented in over 80 schools that serve over 40,000 children and 5,000 teachers in the New York City public school system. The AFSZ works in cooperation with the New York City Departments of Health and Mental Hygiene, Education, and Transportation.
For more information, please contact Rebecca Kalin at 212-533-6615 or at rk@afsz.org. More information about Idle-Free NYC is available at www.idle-free.info.

Health Care Reform Town Hall Meeting
2009-05-09 10am-1pm
St. Francis College
180 Remsen Street (Court/Clinton) Brooklyn
Congressman Towns welcomes your views about health care reform.
Rep. Towns supports President Obama’s plan to reform our system of health care this year with a Town Hall meeting to get critical stakeholder input. We invite Brooklyn residents, businesses, providers, and federal, state and local government representatives to share your views on targeted panels. We particularly need to hear from people who lack health insurance, have trouble finding quality and affordable health care, or have experienced problems with Medicaid or Medicare. “In 2005, over 300 thousand Kings County residents lacked health insurance. This is unacceptable! Health care reform has to happen now, because it is critical for Brooklyn and the nation, especially during this economic downturn,” according to Representative Towns.
Please plan to attend and share your views with Rep. Towns. Please RSVP to be speak. Please contact Edna Johnson or Karen Cherry for more information at (718) 855-8018 or edna.johnson@mail.house.gov or karen.cherry@mail.house.gov

E-mail karen.jemmott@downstate.edu
We are partnering with Midwood High School at Brooklyn College, Designers Against AIDS and Sesame Flyers International, Inc. to make the event a success. Since over 800 youth attended last year's conference, we expect to reach at least 700 youth between the ages of 13-21 at this year's event. We will work closely with our community partners to reach out to at-risk youths.
Health Talks/Presentations
Leading physicians from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and other experts will conduct lectures on diabetes, obesity, STDs, HIV/AIDS, and teen dating violence. Through a fashion show presentation, we will use symbolism to raise HIV/AIDS awareness/prevention by delaying sexual activities or practicing safer sex. For instance, models will be outfitted in a condom dress and jacket, representing safe sex practices and the importance of delaying sexual activity until both parties are mature to understand the implications involved in sexual activity. The goal is to make safer sex education more fashionable.
Free Health Screenings
In addition to the fashion show, youth will have the option of being counseled and screened for STDs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia and HIV, receiving their HIV results in 20 minutes. At last year's event, we were able to test 142 youth for HIV (about 18% percent of attendees). Free health screenings will also be provided, such as diabetes and BMI assessments.
Networking Opportunities
In addition, youths will have networking opportunities, allowing them to seek the expertise of many different organizations in the community. Over 50 exhibitors/organizations will be on-hand to offer youths health information and other support services. It is our goal to meet the overall needs of youths in the areas of education/career development, fitness/weight loss, nutrition, finance, mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, managed care, skin, hair and dental care, and youth empowerment.
Youth Resource Guide
Moreover, youths will receive The Life Saver: A Healthy Youth Resource Guide, a tool that will provide them with access to physicians, programs, services, and resources in their community. As further incentives, dinner will be served and gift bags will be distributed to each youth as a token of appreciation for his/her participation. Some participants will also win prizes (gift cards, certificates and coupons) during the answer/question sessions.
