Brooklyn Politics of Food Conference: Global Crisis, Local Action 2009-05-02
PS 321 & John Jay High School in Park Slope
Brooklyn
Grassroots Communities Organize For A
Healthy, Environmentally Sustainable, and Socially Just Food System
Free and Open to the Public
Co-sponsored by the Park Slope Food Coop (PSFC) and the Caribbean Women’s Health Association (CWHA), this one-day, Brooklyn-wide conference will educate Brooklynites about what we at the grass roots can do to address our broken global food system. Why do we have food shortages and skyrocketing prices? How are high rates of obesity and diabetes related to cheap prices for corn, sugar, and other subsidized commodities produced by agribusiness and added to our food by big food manufac¬turers? We’ll learn how the food system impacts social justice, human health, and environ¬mental sustainability. We’ll also discover local, regional, national, and inter¬national organizations working to change the system by providing healthy, environ¬mentally sustainable food and protecting those who produce it.
Our goals are:
• Educate the larger Brooklyn community on food as a critical issue for both present and future
• Strengthen existing organizations working on food issues
• Expand community participation and develop networks within and across neighborhoods
• Create greater awareness and unity on these issues, and educate and activate elected officials
We invite you to help us gather partners, participants, and funders. We expect up to 1,000 participants from every Brooklyn neighborhood and 150 partner community organizations.

CAMBA’s HIV Anti-Stigma Project
2009-04-01 CAMBA
Brooklyn Join us in dispelling HIV-related stigma and increasing awareness in Brooklyn. Through a New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene initiative, CAMBA’s HIV Anti-Stigma Project offers free educational presentations and performances through its three components:
Theater Troupe: Through performing educational skits that draw on comedy, drama, and song, we explore HIV-related stigma and encourage HIV prevention and testing.
Speakers Bureau: Our speakers share stories about the effects of HIV-related stigma on their lives and on Brooklyn communities. The speakers also facilitate discussions to further examine stigma and ways to address it.
Community Champions Initiative: We recruit business owners and other Brooklyn residents to be Community Champions and join in CAMBA’s efforts through engaging people in conversations about HIV and the negative effects of HIV-related stigma. Candidates commit to training and helping to organize an event in their neighborhood.
To find out more about our free presentations and performances:

“Donating blood is literally giving the gift of life. Each day,
NYBC needs close to 2,000 people a day to roll up their
sleeves to give the gift of life. There is simply no substitute for
voluntarily donated blood. Without volunteer donors, our
community would not have an adequate community blood
