Brooklyn Politics of Food Conference: Global Crisis, Local Action Grassroots 2009-05-02
PS 321 & John Jay High School in Park Slope
Brooklyn
Brooklyn Politics of Food Conference: Global Crisis, Local Action
Grassroots Communities Organize For A
Healthy, Environmentally Sustainable, and Socially Just Food System
Co-sponsored by the Park Slope Food Coop (PSFC) and the Caribbean Women's Health Association (CWHA), this one-day, Brooklyn-wide conference will educate Brooklynites about what we at the grass roots can do to address our broken global food system. Why do we have food shortages and skyrocketing prices? How are high rates of obesity and diabetes related to cheap prices for corn, sugar, and other subsidized commodities produced by agribusiness and added to our food by big food manufac¬turers? We’ll learn how the food system impacts social justice, human health, and environ¬mental sustainability. We’ll also discover local, regional, national, and inter¬national organizations working to change the system by providing healthy, environ¬mentally sustainable food and protecting those who produce it.
* Free and Open to the Public
We invite you to help us gather partners, participants, and funders. We expect up to 1,000 participants from every Brooklyn neighborhood and 150 partner community organizations.

We will work closely with our community partners to reach out to at-risk youths.
Health Talks/Presentations
Leading physicians from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and other experts will conduct lectures on diabetes, obesity, STDs, HIV/AIDS, and teen dating violence. Through a fashion show presentation, we will use symbolism to raise HIV/AIDS awareness/prevention by delaying sexual activities or practicing safer sex. For instance, models will be outfitted in a condom dress and jacket, representing safe sex practices and the importance of delaying sexual activity until both parties are mature to understand the implications involved in sexual activity. The goal is to make safer sex education more
Free Health Screenings
In addition to the fashion show, youth will have the option of being counseled and screened for STDs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia and HIV, receiving their HIV results in 20 minutes. At last year's event, we were able to test 142 youth for HIV (about 18% percent of attendees). Free health screenings will also be provided, such as diabetes and BMI assessments.
Networking Opportunities
In addition, youths will have networking opportunities, allowing them to seek the expertise of many different organizations in the community. Over 50 exhibitors/organizations will be on-hand to offer youths health information and other support services. It is our goal to meet the overall needs of youths in the areas of education/career development, fitness/weight loss, nutrition, finance, mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, managed care, skin, hair and dental care, and youth empowerment.
Youth Resource Guide
Moreover, youths will receive The Life Saver: A Healthy Youth Resource Guide, a tool that will provide them with access to physicians, programs, services, and resources in their community. As further incentives, dinner will be served and gift bags will be distributed to each youth as a token of appreciation for his/her participation. Some participants will also win prizes (gift cards, certificates and coupons) during the answer/question sessions.
