The Brooklyn Regional Planning Committee for "Common Ground", the AIDS Institute's Faith Communities Project, invites you to participate in a special "Community Dialogue" on October 7, 2008 at Fellowship Moravian Church in Brooklyn, with Dr. Robert Fullilove of Columbia University.
The program entitled, "My Brother's Keeper: Responding to the needs of men living with HIV/AIDS," will focus on the impact of HIV/AIDS on men and how faith communities can address their needs. The purpose of the community dialogue is:
· to increase awareness of the impact of HIV/AIDS on men and the response of faith communities,
· to learn about services that are available to support men and their families and,
· to discuss barriers to men accessing HIV related services.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and New York Methodist Hospital will be hosting several events to promote educational awareness about the disease.

NYM will also host a free health fair, Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Finally, New York Methodist Hospital is partnering with Gilda’s Club NYC to offer a free lecture on breast cancer. Alan Dosik, M.D., attending physician of the Department of Hematology/ Oncology at NYM will give a presentation titled “Understanding Your Options in Treating Metastatic Breast Cancer: Longevity and Quality of Life.” This lecture will take place on Thursday, October 16, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Hospital’s Executive Dining Room, 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Approximately 400,000 Americans are living with multiple sclerosis (MS), and each week 200 additional individuals are diagnosed. New York Methodist Hospital is offering a free support group for individuals diagnosed with MS in the past two years. The Multiple Sclerosis Newly Diagnosed Support Group offers information and a place to begin to discuss concerns, experiences and resources. The group will meet weekly for four weeks on Thursdays, beginning October 23, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The meetings will take place in the Hospital’s Spine and Arthritis Center located on the second floor of the Medical Office Pavilion, 263 Seventh Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking to learn about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Thursday, October 23, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session. Depression is a common and highly treatable condition which includes both emotional and physical symptoms that are controlled by chemicals called neurotransmitters. Jessy Colah, M.D., chief of psychiatry and vice chairman of the Department of Neurosciences at New York Methodist Hospital will give a free lecture on depression. The lecture is sponsored by NYM’s HealthOutreach® Program, the Department of Neurosciences, and the Brooklyn Mental Health Council.
