On March 6th, 2008, NARAL Pro-Choice New York will host "Universal Health Care: Will Women's Needs Be Met?" an event on universal health
care and its implications on women's health. The event will cover the advocacy, policy, and legislative aspects of achieving health care
access for all New Yorkers. The following speakers will present:
Byllye Avery, founder of the Black Women's Health Imperative and President of the Avery Institute for Social Change, will discuss the
need for women to take leadership in working for quality, affordable health care for our families and our communities. She will describe the
goals of the new national project she has co-founded, Raising Women's Voices for the Health Care We Need.
Elisabeth Benjamin, Director of Healthcare Restructuring Initiatives for Community Service Society, will discuss her recent statewide poll on New Yorkers and health reform. She will explain how more women than men are
covered by public insurance in New York and the correlating ramifications. She will present an overview of current advocacy efforts
to expand health care access in NYS, including the Community Service Society's proposal entitled Cornerstone for Coverage.
Richard N. Gottfried, Chair of the New York State Commission on Health in the New York State Assembly, will discuss the legislative strategy to expand health care in New York State and his plan to increase coverage, entitled New York Health Plus: Better Coverage for All of Us at Lower Cost.
Lois Uttley, Director of the MergerWatch Project, will discuss her research on what women's needs and desires are for a universal health care plan, and the steps we must take to ensure women's voices are heard.
The event is designed to address the questions and concerns of all New York women. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this unique event.
NARAL Pro-Choice New York welcomes other women's rights, health care and reproductive rights organizations to co-sponsor the event.

Please join the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Northeastern Regional Training and Medical Consultation Consortium as they commemorate World TB Day, March 24. This year’s conference will discuss the impact of immigration on tuberculosis from a historical perspective, recent developments in the use of the QuantiFERON TB-Gold test, antituberculosis drugs currently in development and the current gaps in TB research and development.
In addition, the conference will address the ongoing challenges of TB transmission within a particular community and discuss new clinical policies and procedures for infection control practices and the diagnosis and treatment of active TB disease and latent TB infection. DCIS Support Group.
There is a growing population of women who have been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Often there are conflicting interpretations of the risk presented by this diagnosis and different opinions about appropriate treatment. The emotional fallout generated by a diagnosis of DCIS will be addressed at this peer-led support group.

The psychosocial impact of testing positive for BRCA 1 & 2 genes can be difficult on the individual and the family unit. But then what? Join Sivya Twersky, MS, CGC, LSW for an open discussion of the issues involved. Ms.Twersky is a board certified genetic counselor and administrative director and clinical coordinator of the genetic counseling service at Hackensack University Medical Center. Since the mid-nineties, with the discovery of the BRCA genes, she has been involved in developing the hereditary cancer risk assessment program at Hackensack, where more than 250 patients are currently seen annually. Ms. Twersky will be starting a support group at Hackensack to deal with these issues.
