The Public Health View of Antiretroviral Therapy:
Emerging Strategies for Biological Prevention of HIV-1 2008-02-19 12:30-2:00pm
The Paul A. Kaplan Education & Training Center, The Tisch Building - 4th Floor
119 West 24 New York City
A discussion with Myron S. Cohen, MD
Director of the Institute of Global Health and Infectious Diseases & Chief of the Division of Clinical Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina.
For every HIV-infected person who receives antiretroviral therapy (ART), 4 to 6 more people become infected. Treatment alone will not end this epidemic, but it can play a big role in HIV prevention. The success of ART in reducing mother-to-child transmission has sparked research into ART as a tool for HIV prevention. ART also has public health considerations for the reduction of the transmission of resistant viruses. Dr. Cohen will discuss how treatment is revolutionizing how we think about HIV prevention.
Dr. Cohen has conducted landmark studies related to the biology of HIV transmission, and use of antiretroviral agents for prevention. He received a National Institute of Health’s Merit Award for ongoing support of this work. He is the editor of the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and is the author of more than 400 publications. Much of Dr. Cohen’s research has been conducted in resource-constrained countries, especially in the African country of Malawi and in the People’s Republic of China. He has been recognized since 2000 as one of America’s “Top Doctors” and in 2007, among “America’s Best Doctors.”
The presentation is free and open to the general public. Lunch will be served.
