A panel discussion on issues dealing with mental health and immigration. Topics will revolve around access to mental health sevices and the barriers that still persist for immigrants with mental illness, the challenges of acculturation and other areas of conncern for immigrant communities. Panel will bring together experts on mental health within New York City's immigrant communities.
This program is part of a series in conjunction with the Suitcases Exhibit and is Co-sponsored by NAMI NYC-Metro and the New York Immigration Coalition. The Suitcase Exhibit is a poignant illumination of both the humanity and struggle of those with mental illness, while illustrating the vital importance of quality care, compassion, and the hope of recovery today.

The Office of Minority Health would like to invite you to participate in a continuing education conference call which is the second in a series of calls scheduled to be held by the NYSDOH Office of MInority Health. Five (5)calls will be held in total, with two organizations presenting at each call between November and March. The presenters will be awardees of the 2007-2008 NYSDOH Office of Minority Health Mini-Grant Program: Achieving Targeted Reductions in Disparities in Asthma, Diabetes, and Heart Disease and Stroke (RFA# 0607131042).
The goal of the presentations will be to gain greater awareness and understanding of the various programs funded through the Mini-Grant Program, and to discuss communities, populations, disparities, programs, challenges and lessons learned. In addition, we hope to foster communication and networking amongst the various organizations throughout New York that are currently working toward the same goal: reducing health disparities.
Presenters for the January 10th call will be from Metropolitan Hospital Center's Diabetes Self-Management Initiative and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wayne County's Diabetes Outreach and Education Program for African Americans.
Registration is necessary and will be limited to the first 25 respondents.

"At Home On Stage" is an outreach to the homeless community through theater. Josh went out into the shelters, churches, and community centers, looking for people in shelters, single-room occupancy, and actual homeless people, who are interested in self-expression. They spent the last few weeks workshopping with them on work they'd like to do. Now, this coming weekend, the participants are showing their work to you, the invited audience.

The title of the presentation is: “Childhood Obesity and Cognitive Impairment”
We are pleased to have as our presenter, Dr. Antonio Convit, Institute of Community Health-Nathan Kline Research Institute, Associate Professor NYU School of Medicine, Center for Brain Health.
Dr. Convit will discuss the impact of glucose regulation on cognition in adolescents with metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes, out of which has developed NYU’s “The BODY Project” proposed in partnership with the public school system.

DCIS Support Group:
There is a growing population of women who have been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Often there are conflicting interpretations of the risk presented by this diagnosis and different opinions about appropriate treatment. The emotional fallout generated by a diagnosis of DCIS will be addressed at this peer-led support group.

The Family Justice Center provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and their children. The services are all provided by partner agencies including City and State agencies, the Kings County District Attorney's Office, community non-profits and faith-based organizations.
Faith plays an integral role in the lives of our clients and your congregants. It is important that we address how faith leaders can provide support and talk about domestic violence in your communities, as well as how the FJC can be used as a resource to assist you.

The City Launches Notify NYC, An Emergency Public Messaging Program

New York City Mayor Bloomberg announced the launch of Notify NYC, a program that will enable registered New Yorkers to receive timely emergency-related messages via email, text, and telephone. Information about significant emergencies in any of the four pilot areas — Lower Manhattan, the northeast Bronx, southwest Staten Island, and the Rockaways — will be transmitted to those who subscribe to this service.
Starting December 4 those interested in receiving emergency updates can register at NYC.gov. Beginning Monday, December 10, the City will start sending emergency-related messages.
Please take a moment to become familiar with the program at http://www.NYC.gov/notifynyc, share widely with those who live or work in the pilot areas, and encourage folks to sign up to receive these important messages.
